Shock and awe. That was the reaction of most people across the world when they laid their eyes on the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper.

But this statement means much more to the legion of hapless cleaners assigned the unenviable and enormous task of keeping the towering giant gleaming in the desert sun.

Figuring out exactly how to clean the building has been a difficult riddle troubling many a technological mind around the world.

But just in time for the grand opening of the building came the solution, to what has been touted as the world’s biggest technical challenge, in the form of an Australian company.

The company, Cox Gomyl designed and installed Burj Khalifa’s unique window-cleaning carousels which literally swept into action moments before its official opening this week.

Designing the perfect tools to scrub the towering edifice has led to the development of a $7.3 million gadgetry that can buff the 828 metre tall building on a regular basis.

The company has designed 12 machines, each weighing 13 tonnes, to play host to 36 cleaners who hover outside windows and resort to the very un-technical task of cleaning the surfaces using their hand cloths and some soapy water.

The building has a total 24,830 reflective windows, comprises of 120,000 square metres of glass and 45,000 square metres of aluminium and stainless steel panels.

This is about the same amount of material that goes into 10 smaller sized buildings.

To clean it, workers mount specially designed machines, which gel themselves to the building’s outline using a type of a rail that allows the people carriers to stick close to the building.

Unfortunately, getting the entire building sparkling is a process that will take three months to complete, even with all the advanced technology being used.

To truly see technology at work within the building you step into the elevators. Jettisoning people up the skyscraper for nearly a kilometre is no mean task.

Burj Khalifa’s lifts move up and down the building at the dizzying speed of 26mph – a pace assured to make faint-hearted users to gasp in shock. Of course, Burj Khalifa does not expect humans to shuttle themselves upwards for the entire journey non-stop.
